The Sierra Varminter .224 inch 40 Grain Jacketed Soft Point bullet (brand part no. 1200) is purpose-built by Sierra for the .22 Hornet cartridge, sold 100 to a box for varmint handloaders. This bullet carries a .114 sectional density and ballistic coefficients that shift by velocity range: .116 at 2800 fps and above, .122 between 2800 and 2000 fps, and .135 at 2000 fps and below, giving handloaders precise trajectory data across the Hornet’s modest velocity window. It is a jacketed soft point built to expand reliably at the Hornet’s lower muzzle velocities rather than the higher-velocity centerfires.

Key Specifications

• The .224 inch bullet diameter is designed specifically for the .22 Hornet cartridge.
• A 40 grain weight matches the light, low-velocity nature of the Hornet round.
• The jacketed soft point construction is built to expand reliably even at the Hornet’s modest velocities.
• A .114 sectional density is published for handloaders calculating penetration and trajectory.
• Ballistic coefficient is rated in three bands: .116 above 2800 fps, .122 between 2000 and 2800 fps, and .135 below 2000 fps.
• Sold 100 bullets per box for high-volume Hornet handloaders.
• Ships at approximately 0.61 lb per box.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cartridge is this bullet designed for? The .22 Hornet specifically, given its light 40 grain weight matched to the Hornet’s lower velocity window.

Why does the ballistic coefficient change with velocity? Sierra publishes separate BC values because bullet drag behaves differently at different velocity bands, which matters most for long-range trajectory calculations.

What is sectional density used for? It is a measure of a bullet’s weight relative to its diameter, used by handloaders to estimate penetration potential.
