The SureFire SOCOM556-SB2 in black is a 5.56mm Fast-Attach suppressor made for short-barrel rifles (SureFire part no. SOCOM556-SB2-BK). It comes from the same team that built the USSOCOM trial-winning SOCOM556-RC, with a larger bore diameter and an internal design that targets very low back pressure and strong sound reduction. CNC laser-welded high-temperature alloys and stainless steel keep it strong even in full-auto use. At 17 ounces it adds as little as 3.8 inches to the weapon. For a short-barreled AR that needs a suppressor sized to its barrel, this is the SB2.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quiet is it on a short barrel? SureFire publishes 142 dB from a 9-inch barrel, 140 dB from 10.3 inches and 137 dB from 11 inches, all with M855 ammunition and measured at the shooter’s ear. It lists 136 dB on 14.5 and 16-inch barrels.

Do I need ATF approval to buy this? No. As of October 9, 2026, ATF no longer requires Form 4 approval, registration or a tax stamp for suppressors. It transfers on a Form 4473 with a background check through a Class 3 (SOT) dealer. State and local laws still apply.

Why choose the SB2 over a standard 5.56 suppressor? The SB2 has a larger bore and internal layout tuned for barrels of 10 inches or less, where back pressure and blast are hardest on a conventional can.
