The Savage 334 Walnut Compact .243 Win rifle is the light-recoiling member of the 334 family, built with a 12.75-inch length of pull for shooters who are still growing into a deer rifle (brand part no. 23296). The satin Turkish walnut stock and silver bolt sit on Savage‘s matte black carbon steel receiver with its integrated recoil lug, three-lug bolt, 60-degree lift and three-position safety. An 18.5-inch heavy sporter barrel is button rifled, free floating and cut with an 11-degree target crown, and the receiver wears a factory steel MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail. A 3-round detachable box magazine with an ambidextrous release feeds the rifle. For a first deer or antelope rifle that is a real bolt gun rather than a scaled-down toy, this is a sound choice.

Key Specifications

• The chambering is .243 Winchester, a flat-shooting deer and varmint cartridge with recoil that new shooters tolerate well.
• The barrel is 18.5 inches, button rifled, free floating and crowned at 11 degrees in a heavy sporter contour.
• The rate of twist is 1:10, which stabilizes the heavier 95 to 100 grain deer bullets as well as light varmint loads.
• Capacity is 3 rounds in a detachable box magazine with an ambidextrous release.
• The stock is Turkish walnut with a satin finish, a recoil pad and a 12.75-inch compact length of pull.
• A steel Picatinny rail comes installed on the receiver so a scope mounts without separate bases.
• The bolt lifts 60 degrees on three locking lugs, which keeps the handle clear of a scope on the cycle.
