The ASP Metro Defender D1 pepper spray in Cobalt (ASP part no. 54950) is the compact aluminum Defender that ASP formerly sold as the Palm Defender. ASP renamed its Palm line to Metro D1, and this is the same pocket-sized device in a cobalt finish. Instead of a throwaway aerosol can, it uses a replaceable OC insert that loads into a machined body, so the device outlasts the spray inside it. ASP designed Defenders to be held and activated horizontally, which helps keep the spray pointed where you mean it to go. It is a small, discreet option for everyday carry in a pocket, bag or on a key ring.

Key Specifications

• The finish is Cobalt, the color that separates this Metro Defender D1 from the other colors in the line.
• The body is machined aluminum, which keeps the device light while making it very hard to damage.
• The surface is micro-knurled, giving a secure grip in a closed hand.
• The included Heat insert carries 10% oleoresin capsicum with 1.4% major capsaicinoids, the strength ASP lists for its law enforcement-grade formula.
• A thumb-release safety is built in, so the device needs a deliberate two-step action before it will discharge.
• The dispersal port is O-ring sealed, which protects the mechanism from dirt and moisture.
• The solid brass actuator has a hole for a key ring, giving you a second way to carry it besides a pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Metro Defender D1 used? ASP designed it to be held and activated horizontally, with a thumb-release safety that has to be disengaged before the insert is activated. That layout helps send the spray in the intended direction.

Can I replace the insert after it is used? Yes. The Defender is built around a replaceable insert, so you discard the used insert and load a new one instead of replacing the whole device. ASP date-codes its Heat inserts, and an insert should be replaced when the marked date comes up.

What comes with the Metro Defender D1? It ships with one Heat (OC) insert. ASP also makes Test inserts filled with a harmless inert spray, which are sold separately for practice.
