The initial run of .500 S&W Magnum cases used a large pistol primer pocket per Smith & Wesson and Cor-Bon specifications, but on July 28, 2003, the primer pocket specification was changed to large rifle to prevent the primer from being pierced by the firing pin under max loads with heavy bullets over 400 grains.
