Why is cost per round the only fair way to compare ammo prices?
Because box sizes make sticker prices meaningless — 9mm ships in 20-, 50-, 100-, 200- and 1,000-round packaging. Price divided by rounds per box is the only apples-to-apples number, so that’s exactly what this list ranks.
Is budget 9mm ammo reliable?
Everything in this ranking is factory-new ammunition from established manufacturers we stock and shoot ourselves — “budget” here means economical cases and bulk packaging, not questionable quality. As with any ammo, run a box through your pistol before committing to a case.
What’s the difference between steel, aluminum, and brass cases?
Steel and aluminum cases cost less and are usually why a load tops this list. They’re not reloadable, can run a touch dirtier, and some indoor ranges don’t allow steel case — brass reloads and feeds smoothest in picky pistols. For pure range volume, case material rarely matters.
Should I buy by the box or in bulk?
Bulk packs (200–1,000 rounds) almost always win on cost per round — you’ll see them ranked here whenever they’re in stock. The smart play: test one box of a new load first, then buy the case once your pistol likes it.
