How to Buy a Suppressor: A First-Timer’s Guide
There has never been a better time to buy your first suppressor. The $200 federal tax stamp dropped to $0 on January 1, 2026, and ATF approvals that used to take the better part of a year now routinely come back in 1–2 weeks. The paperwork still exists — but it’s electronic, it’s fast, and a good dealer handles most of it with you.
Here’s exactly how it works, start to finish, from a licensed Class 3 dealer (SOT) near Lubbock, TX.
Five steps from “I want one” to taking it home
Can you buy one?
Suppressors are legal to own in Texas (and most states), legal to hunt with in Texas, and there’s no Texas-side permit or license — the only process is the federal one. To buy from a dealer you must be:
- ✓21 or older.
- ✓Legally able to own a firearm — you’ll pass the same background check as any gun purchase.
- ✓A resident of the state where you’re buying — out of state? Federal law routes your transfer through a dealer in your home state (see FAQ below).
Pick your suppressor
Two things matter most for a first can:
- ✓Caliber. A suppressor is rated for a maximum caliber. Many buyers start with a .30-cal rifle can (covers .308 down through 5.56) or a 9mm pistol can for versatility — and a dedicated .22 can is the cheapest way in and the most fun per dollar.
- ✓Mounting. Direct-thread is simple; quick-detach mounts cost more but move between rifles fast. Your barrel needs a threaded muzzle.
Buy from us and the transfer starts immediately. Buying from an online retailer? Have them ship to our FFL/SOT — we receive it on a dealer-to-dealer Form 3, then start your Form 4. Either way works; our NFA transfer service covers both.
The paperwork (easier than you’ve heard)
The ATF Form 4 is the application to transfer the suppressor to you. Since January 1, 2026 the federal transfer tax on it is $0 — the form, the background check, and the registration still apply, but the $200 fee is gone.
Filed electronically through ATF eForms, the application needs three things from you:
- ✓Fingerprints — in electronic EFT format for eForms.
- ✓A passport-style photo.
- ✓Your basic identity info — the form itself, which we complete together at the counter.

The wait: weeks, not months
The old horror stories — 10, 12, 14 months — are history. With eForms, most approvals now come back in 1–2 weeks. Exact times move with ATF volume (the $0 stamp brought a wave of new buyers), so we’ll give you a realistic estimate when you file — and we’ll let you know the moment your approval lands.
One rule to know: the suppressor stays with us until your approval comes back. That’s federal law, not store policy.
Pickup day
When your Form 4 is approved, you’ll come in, complete the standard ATF Form 4473 background-check paperwork at the counter — same as any firearm purchase — and take your suppressor home. Done.
Do you need a gun trust?
You do not need a trust to own a suppressor in Texas — most first-time buyers file as individuals, and individual eForm approvals are currently the fastest.
A gun trust is worth considering if you want more than one person to legally possess the suppressor (spouse, adult kids, hunting partners), or you’re planning a collection with inheritance in mind. Suppressors in Texas: the local notes
- ✓Hunting: legal for all legal game in Texas — deer, hogs, predators, exotics, all of it. Texas Parks & Wildlife places no restrictions on suppressor use.
- ✓No state hoops: no Texas permit, license, or registration beyond the federal process.
- ✓Where you can shoot: anywhere you can legally shoot unsuppressed.

Is the $200 tax stamp really gone?
Yes — for suppressors (and SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs), the federal transfer tax dropped to $0 for applications filed on or after January 1, 2026. The Form 4 process itself still applies. (Stamps paid before 2026 aren’t refundable.)
How long will I actually wait?
Most filings are currently approved in 1–2 weeks; trusts can run a bit longer. We’ll give you a current, honest estimate when you file.
Can I take it home the same day I buy it?
No — it stays in our shop until the ATF approves your Form 4. With current approval times, that’s usually a short wait.
I bought a suppressor online from another retailer. Can you receive it?
Yes. Have them ship it to our FFL/SOT, and we’ll handle the dealer-to-dealer Form 3 and file your Form 4 — see our NFA transfer service for details.
Do I need to be a Texas resident to buy from you?
To transfer the suppressor to you directly, yes — federal law requires the transfer to happen through a dealer in your state of residence. If you’re out of state, we can ship to your local SOT dealer.
What does it cost all-in?
The suppressor, plus our NFA transfer fee — $25 when you buy the suppressor through us, or $50 if you bought it elsewhere and transfer it through our shop — plus the optional $40/person eForm 4 Submission Package. The federal tax is $0.
